Cotton is grown across more than 70 countries, but the fibre produced in each region differs fundamentally in staple length, strength, fineness, and market value. Sea Island cotton from the Caribbean, with fibres reaching 50 millimetres, serves a different market from standard upland cotton harvested mechanically across the US Cotton Belt.
Egyptian Giza 45 from the Nile Delta commands premiums that Indian short-staple desi cotton does not. Gossypicultures recognises these regional distinctions.
Regional Character
Cotton quality is classified by staple (fibre) length. Extra-long staple (ELS) cotton, above 35 millimetres, represents the premium tier: Egyptian Giza 45 (~45mm, crisp hand, high tensile strength), Sea Island (~50mm, pearl-like lustre, hand-harvested in the Caribbean, certified by WISIC), and Suvin (a Sea Island x Sujata hybrid from India with the finest fibre diameter and a silk-like sheen).
These ELS grades are hand-picked, low-volume, and command substantial premiums over commodity cotton.
Long-staple cotton (28-34mm) includes American Pima and Supima (southwestern USA) used in premium shirting and bedding. Medium-staple upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, 25-28mm) accounts for roughly 90% of global production and is machine-harvested across the USA, China, India, Brazil, and Australia.
West African cotton from Burkina Faso, Mali, Benin, and Cote d'Ivoire is hand-picked, typically medium-to-long staple, and recognised in textile markets for clean picking and consistent quality.

Production and Trade
Global cotton production reached 25.22 million tonnes in the 2024/25 season across 32.85 million hectares (ICAC). Global trade in raw cotton totalled an estimated 9.94 million tonnes, a 4% year-on-year increase. China, India, Brazil, the USA, and Pakistan account for the majority of production volume.
Cotton is traded on the ICE Futures exchange under the No. 2 contract. The Liverpool Cotton Association (LCA) administers the Universal Cotton Standards used in international arbitration. USDA cotton classing provides the reference grading system for fibre length, strength, micronaire, and colour grade. The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) publishes supply-and-demand forecasts.
Premiums for ELS cotton and origin-certified grades are negotiated separately from commodity benchmarks.
Why Gossypicultures
The plural matters. Egyptian Giza 45 and Brazilian Cerrado upland serve fundamentally different textile markets. West African hand-picked cotton and Indian machine-harvested desi cotton carry different quality profiles and different price positions. Each origin brings its own cultivar selection, its own harvesting practice, and its own grading standards.
The WISIC certification for Sea Island cotton and the Supima mark for American Pima demonstrate that origin identity is already a commercially protected value in cotton markets.
